Hague appeals court convicts suspect of breaching ISIS sanctions
The Court of Appeal in The Hague has rejected an appeal against multiple terrorism-related charges against a female suspect, including the provision of funds to two persons designated under the EU’s sanctions on the Islamic State (‘IS’/’ISIS’) group.
The court found the defendant guilty on several counts, including aiding and abetting participation in ISIS.
On the charge related to financial transactions, the court said the defendant had ‘made resources (amounts of money)’ available to two persons in violation of the Dutch Sanctions Act 1977, when she transferred a total of €500 to two women who were considered part of ISIS.
The judgement noted that the suspect ‘shared messages in several Telegram groups’, which support IS’s media strategy. It ruled that by distributing these messages, the suspect ‘deliberately supported the IS media strategy,’ thus contributing to the group’s propaganda efforts.
The court imposed a comprehensive sentence that includes a prison term of 48 months, accounting for pre-trial detention.
